Design

A white walled stage fills with light and shadow, performers manipulate objects and lamps to perform the ‘dance’ of Buttonville, much like an animated story-book. The lights are always used as objects that are interacted with to create the image.

Evolved from recent Winning Productions research projects, this design was born out a story telling style using objects, images and actors. Video projections are integrated into the design using specially designed hardware triggers to physically interact with the image.

Below is a mood board of internet collected images, also a selection of recent design research projects by Stephen, relating in some way to Buttonville.

1    RECENT EXPERIMENTS
This picture is from a research into multiple shadows using coloured light, it is a study towards an outdoor project using a tennis court and found objects with active participants playing tennis. The projection wall will eventually be lit by 8 x 1000W theatre lights using red, green and blue combinations to project a variety of colour and compositions.

2    FOUND IMAGES
These are selection of shadow works designed for gallery installations.

From the Norwegan art collective Verdensteatret - their video/ projection/ shadow work And All the Questionmarks Started to Sing, is a coproduction with Theater der Welt, Black Box Theater, BIT Teatergarasjen and Avant Art Festival.

From French theatre company Theatre de la Jacquerie production of La Fin d'une Liason. Shadow design is by Jean-Pierre Lescot, using a complex arrangement of four OHP projectors to create the images. I was fortunate to sit in on the rehearsals for this production in Paris in 2010.

And the Luminoceros itself? Some inspiration -
